It's an award-winning day!

While my family shovels the 20 inches of snow a kind blizzard left them yesterday, thousands of librarians brave the ice and slush of Chicago to attend the Youth Media Awards Ceremony at the American Library Association's Midwinter Conference this morning. The Youth Media Awards! The Caledecott! The Newbery! And tons others that are just as wonderful but lesser-known.

Huge congratulations to Dan Santat and my favorite picture book of the year The Adventures of Beekle for winning the Caldecott Medal! And this is why I love Twitter:

One Caldecott winner and SIX honors! Six! Can you tell I'm excited? Here they are:

Nana in the City written and illustrated by Lauren Castillo

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art illustrated by Mary GrandPré, written by Barb Rosenstock

Sam & Dave Dig a Hole illustrated by Jon Klassen, written by Mac Barnett

Viva Frida written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales

The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus illustrated by Melissa Sweet, written by Jen Bryant

This One Summer illustrated by Jillian Tamaki, written by Mariko Tamaki

Sadly, we only have Sam & Dave in the LS Library, but we will definitely put the others at the top of our list for next year. Well, except for This One Summer, which is a young adult graphic novel - and a fantastic one at that! - about a teen girl's summer at the beach with her family.
